Architecture for Manufacturing and Assembly

Prefab construction will be a transformative innovation in the architecture and construction industries. It will maximize its potential when we shift our approaches from the conventional project process to a more holistic integration between designer, engineer, contractor, and manufacturer. Recent developments in BIM/CAD and design for manufacturing accelerate this paradigm shift by linking design, procurement, manufacturing, and assembling.  AfMA is a roadmap toward the advanced-level of prefab industry ecology with manufacturing and assembly with five-pillar disruptive ideas.

AfMA five-pillar principles:

  1. Increased efficiency and competitive cost from automatic and mass manufacturing while providing mass customization design opportunities.

  2. Improved quality by supplying parts and portions of building through a global tiered supply chain system.

  3. Reduced ecological impacts from lean and holistic integration of design, procurement, manufacturing and assembly processes.

  4. Increased user customizations into the design/manufacturing process

  5. Sustainable re-use by dismantling and re-purposing off-site manufactured buildings or portions of buildings.
